George Mortimer Lifetime achievement award won by WB Scott

10 Mar 2014

Friday 7th March saw WB Scott aka Bill or Willie to you and me, presented with Perth & Kinross Sports Council's award for life time achievement, the George Mortimer Award. The event was hosted at the Dewars Centre and Eve Muirhead was awarded Sports Personality of the Year.

Bill is known by many outside of our club as a free scoring run machine, in fact he is the top run scorer in the Strathmore Union's history, the previous league record holder was a club professional, which goes to show what a feat it is to hold that record. The 10,000th run came in August 1997 and Union statisticians tally Bill's final runs total north of 13,000 (this does not include cup runs!). It should be remembered these runs contributed to three Union championships, six Scottish Village Cup wins and four Three Counties Cup wins. Bill won the Alex Easson Memorial trophy for Meigle 1st XI batting aggregate runs 16 times and the Union's Laing-Oventsone Trophy for highest aggregate runs a staggering eight times. There were also a fair few overs bowled as well and anyone who faced Scottie in the old bottom net knows he was unplayable in it!

Bill has held numerous roles at the club from groundsman, tea ladies convenor, youth coach and now has the dual role of secretary & treasurer. Bill just gets on with the job and has done much behind the scenes at the club that only those closest to it will know about. A one club man who has given a great deal to this grand old club - Bill, congratulations on your recognition from your sporting peers across the area - you deserve it and some.
