Meigle Cricket Club First XI v Carlton 2nd XI on Sat 20 Apr 2013 at 1230
Meigle Cricket Club Lost
Match report
A gale was blowing over East Perthshire's little piece of paradise that is Victory Park. Carlton 2nd XI where our visitors for a pre-season friendly which was played in a good spirit. The Black & Gold's had a few lads missing due to a mixture of the never ending rugby union season, lads away at uni and injury.
The game was preceded with a minutes silence for Carlton, Holy Cross, ESCA & Scottish Universities legend Martin Flynn. Carlton CC club president Andy MacPherson spoke about Martin ahead of the minutes silence and it was nice for our lads to learn more about Martin's outstanding contribution to our sport.
Jamie and Persil bowled a tight opening spell, Persil had 3 maidens in a row to start and Jamie looked lively. After 12 overs were up and the fielding restrictions over, Black & Gold's skipper Persil introduced some off spin in the form of PJD. Pete's golden arm brought the wicket of Ali Shah, who played some beautiful left handed strokes before succumbing for 43. Kyle McPherson was dropped early in his innings off Persil's bowling, but batted patiently before being retired by his skipper Grant Newman on 40.
It took a while for wicket number 2 to come, but Jamie got a brace with an lbw and then taking out off stump and Persil swung one back in to the left handed Allardice to reduce Carlton 2nds to four down. Matt Well batted sensibly, taking singles rather than trying to beat the sweepers on the boundary, and score at a run a ball, his partner Elder was also adept at rotating the strike and finished on 9 not out. The Meigle ground fielding was tidy, but a couple of regulation catches went a begging and a couple of half chances as well. This will need to be worked on at training midweek - let's hope it is not as blustery! Carlton 2nd XI 178/4 (40 overs)
Meigle opened up with big hitting 'Deadly' Denis Christie and Pete Drummond. Pete was back at the crease for the first time since his awful injury vs Strathy at the start of June last year, and he looked to have lost none of his class, but he was to fall for 13 before he could move up a gear. Charlie Clark's batting has come on leaps and bounds, but it was not his day and he was one of Shah's 3 wickets. Ralphy was looking well set before he had a lapse of judgement and hit left arm spinner Allardice directly to mid-off's hands. The middle order showed little resistance and although Scott played a couple of shots at the end, the skipper was last to fall, C&B to Elder after a lengthy stay at the crease for just 1. Meigle 73 ao (27.3 overs)
After a brief stop off in the Kinloch Arms, Carlton 2nd XI headed back to Edinburgh. We had hoped to have put up more of a test with the bat but with a couple of bowling options missing and a couple of batsmen to come in the Black & Gold's can look forward to playing the Forfarshire second string AKA Forthill at Victory Park next Saturday.
