All the President's men taste success at Golf day 2012

23 Sep 2012

The resurrected annual Meigle Cricket Club Golf Day saw the Club President's team defeat the Club Captain's team in a tussle that ebbed and flowed like a Ryder Cup Sunday...well a Ryder Cup Sunday if they stopped for a Dalmunzie Burger and a pint after 9 holes!

A beautiful Perthshire autumns day greeted the players in the Square in the morning. The chill in the air was much less to do with the time of year and more to do with the fact Persil had not provided Gordie with a bacon & egg ciabbatta!

Matchplay was the order of the day given the mix of golfing experiences on both teams. This seemed to work well, but we were one body light and Jamie Mo (Club Captain's) had to take on the big hitting Gordon Drummond/Charlie Clark (President's) on his own. There were four groups.

Leading out the teams was Ralph Laing for the President's and Tom Duff for the Club Captain's team. Tom had the added bonus of a caddy, one Robbie Duff Esq, who obviously knows a thing or two about shot selection as he guided his dad to victory over Laing. The final score was 1 up for Team Duff, but Ralph did walk away with the bottle of whisky prize for longest drive after a mammoth shot on the 450 yard 6th hole.

Jamie Mo, fresh from his New Zealand experiences battled hard against the big hitting duo, but 80 minutes of rugby from the day before obviously took its toll as he lost this tie. Gordon Drummond struck an exquisite shot on the 'postage stamp' no. 7 and won the Champagne for closest the pin. Both individual prizes therefore went to members of the President's team.

Persil & Scott Boyer took on former opening batsman run-machine Neil Kirk, now of Carlton and young Duncan Leese. Although Persil and Boyer took the odd hole off Kirk/Leese and halved a few, they could not stop the dynamic duo from achieving victory. Scotland rugby starlet Leese showed real poise in the windier conditions of the afternoon session.

In the other match, the two captain's faced off. Pete and Callum Leese defeated President Morton and Denis, who refrained, much to the crowds disappointment, from doing a 'Happy Gilmore'. Maybe next year!!

Well done to the winning team. See you at the AGM in November, if not, see you at winter nets in the new year!!

The Club President's winning team was: Bill Morton (c), Denis Christie, Neil Kirk, Gordon Drummond, Charles Clark, Duncan Leese and Ralph Laing

The annual awards were presented by the club captain in the bar at the end of the golf day. More info to follow on that soon.
