S/Dyce v Meigle Cricket Club First XI on Sat 22 May 2010 at
Meigle Cricket Club Lost by 22 runs
Match report
The ten men of Meigle went in search of their first win of the season to Dyce at the weekend but after a close, enjoyable game were to return with only a handfull of points and an Ashvale Whale to console themselves with.
The game started well for Meigle after inserting S/D on a good looking track and bizzarely wet outfield the openers Jamie and Arun were rewarded for accurate spells with a wicket apiece. A partnership developed though between Irvine and amateur Walters as they set about a repair job. Try as they might Meigle struggled for a breakthrough, not helped by the rare appearance of a round orange object in the Aberdeenshire sky distracting one of the Meigle fielders at a crucial moment. Once Craig settled into his spell a couple of quick wickets put meigle back into the game but another partnership at the end pushed the total up to 196. A vast improvement in the field by everyone compared with wednesdays effort, especially with only 10 men.
And so to the reply. Ewan followed the captains orders to perfection and shared in a 20 run stand that got the innings off to a good start. The skipper and Tom then put together a useful stand and at 85-1 after 22 overs things were looking positive with Tom in particular driving and pulling with aplomb. Two pieces of self destruction by Tom and Pete knocked the reply off course though as Tom pulled a long hop straight to mid wicket and then Pete nicked one, the ball after dispatching the spinner into the screen.
Hope for Meigle appeared in the form of the returning Ally G as he embarked on stands with first arun and then Dr Mo and took the game to the wire. 'Happy' was left with too much to do himself and after a few lusty blows was caught on the boundary with 20 still required.
