Match report
After a glorious week of sunshine God remembered that it was the start of the cricket season and served up a real stinker of a day at Arbroath. After losing the toss and being asked to bat first Denis and Callum threatened to lift the surrounding gloom with a bright start with both players finding the boundary with some sweetly timed shots. Den was undone by a jagging delivery and the skipper joined Callum at the crease. This soon put the brakes on the quick scoring as Drummy struggled to get it off the square relying on his fine off drive (through the slips) for his scoring shot! The extra pressure put on Leesey was begging to tell and the Arbroath midgies were in a bit of bother with a few big swishes.
Callum departed for 16 to a good low catch bringing Tom Duff to the crease. Tom started very well, timing it nicely from the start and hitting well down the ground. After a solid partnership the skipper decided it was his bat that was wrong and not himself and so duly changed for a proper one which made all the difference. Instead of mistiming it straight to the fielders-he timed it straight to the fielders, right down the throat of the deep square leg!
After another few nice shots Tom was bowled by the spinner and with jamie using up his one cover drive early on in his innings he was soon on his way. Regular readers will not need a description of his dismissal.
And so with Meigle sitting on 102-5 young Craig strode out to the crease and the innnings could have gone either way. Craig also had to contend with not only a fired up Arbroath attack but also Arun at the other end still to score, one is as dangerous as the other!
The pair batted, and ran, very sensibly hitting the gaps, scoring off of good deliveries and punishing the bad balls in a 40 run partnership which solidified the visitors total.
The innings was closed with a cameo appearance from 'Hans' Duff who, fresh from his stroll around Arbroath on umpiring avoidance detail, continued his good batting form from the end of last season. Craig was unfortunately run out on the last delivery of the innings to end a fine knock.
A quite simply amazing spread awaited the teams at tea with soup, hot dogs, pizza, bhaji's, cupcakes and more on display. Even a ravenous Boyer barely made a dent in them come the end of an extended tea session.
That was to be the end of the cricket for the day though as steady rain had set in and Arbroath were not afforded a chance to chase Meigle's total of 167, which the visitors thought par for the conditions.
Overall a good run out for most of the guys, with the youngsters looking a year older and a year better, the signs are there for a profitable season.
